Rev. Dr. Y. T. Vinayaraj is an Indian theologian, scholar of religion, educator, author, editor, and ordained minister of the Mar Thoma Church. Since 2021, he has served as Director of the Christian Institute for the Study of Religion and Society (CISRS), Bengaluru. He has previously held teaching and academic leadership positions at several theological institutions in India and currently serves as a visiting faculty member at United Theological College, Bengaluru, the Henry Martyn Institute, Hyderabad, and the Federated Faculty for Research in Religion and Culture, Kottayam.
Vinayaraj’s scholarship spans Dalit theology, political theology, the philosophy of religion, ecumenism, and the relationship between religion and public life. He is the author and editor of numerous books and scholarly publications in English and Malayalam. In addition to his academic work, he has held editorial, ecclesiastical, and ecumenical responsibilities within the Mar Thoma Church and Christian organisations, and has delivered invited lectures and conference papers at universities, seminaries, and academic forums in India and abroad.

Early life and education
Y. T. Vinayaraj studied science before pursuing theological education. He obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree from the University of Kerala. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) from Mar Thoma Theological Seminary, Kottayam, and a Master of Theology (M.Th.) from Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute, Chennai.
Vinayaraj later continued his higher studies at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in the United States, where he completed both the Master of Theology (Th.M.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.
Academic career
Y. T. Vinayaraj has held teaching and academic leadership positions at several theological institutions in India. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Faculty and Registrar at Dharma Jyoti Vidya Peeth, Faridabad. During 2016 and 2017, he also served as Faculty and Registrar at Nav Jyoti Post Graduate and Research Centre, Faridabad.
Between 2018 and 2021, he was a member of the faculty at Mar Thoma Theological Seminary and the Federated Faculty for Research in Religion and Culture (FFRRC), both in Kottayam. Since 2021, he has served as a visiting faculty member at United Theological College, Bengaluru, Henry Martyn Institute, Hyderabad, and the Federated Faculty for Research in Religion and Culture, Kottayam.
Ministry and ecclesiastical service
An ordained minister of the Mar Thoma Church since 1997, Vinayaraj has held a number of editorial, administrative and advisory responsibilities within the Church. He served as Chief Editor of Malankara Sabha Tharaka from 2017 to 2021 and was a member of the Mar Thoma Church’s Socio-Political Commission during the same period. He also served on the Mar Thoma Publication Board between 2014 and 2021.
In 2018, Vinayaraj convened the Mar Thoma Annual Clergy Conference. Earlier, in 1997, he served as a member of the Mar Thoma Church Directory Committee.
Ecumenical engagement
Dr. Vinayaraj has been actively involved in ecumenical organisations and initiatives in India and internationally. Since 2021, he has served as Director of the Christian Institute for the Study of Religion and Society (CISRS), Bengaluru.
Earlier in his career, he was Senior Secretary of the Student Christian Movement of India (SCMI), Kerala Region, from 2001 to 2003. Between 2002 and 2004, he served as a member of the Dalit Desk of the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) and as Vice-President of the Kerala Council of Churches (KCC). In 1994, he served as a Steward on the Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in South Africa.
Publications
Vinayaraj is the author and editor of numerous books and scholarly publications on theology, religion, caste, politics, and ecumenism. His work engages with Dalit theology, political theology, continental philosophy, postcolonial thought, Christian mission, and the relationship between religion and public life. In addition to authoring monographs, he has edited and co-edited several volumes and has contributed extensively to academic journals, edited books, and theological publications in both English and Malayalam.

Vinayaraj has delivered invited lectures, keynote addresses and conference papers at universities, seminaries and ecumenical forums in India and abroad. His presentations have addressed themes including Dalit theology, political theology, ecumenism, Christian mission, theological education, public theology, postcolonial thought, and the intersection of religion and politics. He has participated in academic conferences and consultations organised by institutions such as the World Council of Churches, the Council for World Mission, the Senate of Serampore College, the National Council of Churches in India, and several universities and theological colleges across Asia, Europe, North America and Australia.
