33 Years of Students for Peace
✨ Students for Peace
On 13 February 1993, approximately 5,000 college and school students gathered along Mahatma Gandhi Road in Bangalore for a candlelight demonstration organised by Students for Peace. The event emerged in response to communal tensions following the Babri Masjid demolition on 6 December 1992 and subsequent violence across India. At dusk, students lit candles from a common flame at the Gandhi statue, passing light down the boulevard in a symbolic gesture of unity and non-violence.
Students for Peace was initiated by engineering student Sunil Abraham from Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, and Ravindra Walters from St. Joseph's College. The platform deliberately excluded political organisations, religious groups, and prominent figures to maintain its character as an independent student-led initiative. Around 80 volunteers coordinated logistics, permissions, and crowd management with minimal institutional backing, relying instead on grassroots networks and voluntary contributions.
