Religion and Society: The First Twenty-Five Years, 1953–1978
Religion and Society: The First Twenty-Five Years, 1953–1978 is a retrospective volume edited by Richard W. Taylor and published in 1982 for the Christian Institute for the Study of Religion and Society (CISRS), Bangalore, by the Christian Literature Society, Madras. The volume presents a selection from the first twenty-five volumes of Religion and Society.
The volume
The book was prepared to mark the completion of the journal’s twenty-fifth volume. Taylor notes in his introduction that the period 1953–1978 covers twenty-six calendar years because there was no publication in 1954. The volume therefore commemorates the completion of twenty-five volumes rather than simply twenty-five calendar years.
The title page identifies Richard W. Taylor as editor and states that the volume was published for the Christian Institute for the Study of Religion and Society, Bangalore, by the Christian Literature Society, Madras.
Selection of material
The volume is a selection rather than a complete reprinting of the journal’s contents. Taylor describes the difficulty of choosing material from the twenty-five volumes and explains that he excluded material that had already been reprinted elsewhere or was about to be reprinted.
Book reviews, Bible studies and most editorials were also excluded from the final selection. The material included in the volume was therefore chosen from a substantially larger body of material published during the journal’s first twenty-five volumes.
Taylor states that the final selection was made partly on the basis of length and representativeness. He presents the resulting volume as a celebration of the journal’s first twenty-five years.
Editorial introduction
Taylor’s introduction provides the principal historical and editorial context for the volume. It explains the circumstances in which the retrospective was assembled and describes the process through which material from the twenty-five volumes was selected.
The introduction also records practical aspects of the journal’s publication history, including changes in its editorial arrangements, address and publishing arrangements. These details are presented by Taylor as part of his account of the journal’s first twenty-five volumes.
