Indian Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge

Indian Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (ISPCK) is an Indian publishing and communications organisation whose history dates to 1710. Its origins are associated with the establishment of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) in South India through the cooperation of German and Danish Lutherans and the British SPCK.

History

ISPCK traces its origins to 1710, when the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) became involved in supporting Protestant missionary work in South India. German Lutheran missionaries Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau had been commissioned by the King of Denmark to work in India, and the British SPCK supported their work.

The organisation that developed in India subsequently became an autonomous, self-governing body. It was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, with its registered office at Kashmere Gate, Delhi.

Publishing

Publishing is a central activity of ISPCK. Its present publishing programme includes theological books for seminaries and colleges, textbooks, scholarly monographs, works on biblical studies, theology, Christian faith, church history, mission and evangelism, as well as Christian fiction, poetry, devotionals and other literature.

ISPCK also publishes works dealing with contemporary issues and literature for children. Its catalogue covers subjects including Christianity, theology, biblical studies, church history, missions, Christian ethics, spirituality, social issues, liberation, subaltern studies, theological education and tribal studies.

Academic and theological publishing

ISPCK has published works for theological education and academic study. One documented example is Contextual Theological Education, edited by James Massey and published by the Indian Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1993. The volume contains papers presented at a conference held at Union Biblical Seminary, Pune, in June 1992.

ISPCK’s catalogue also includes publications dealing with Christianity and Indian society, Dalit studies, missions, inter-religious relations and church history. Bibliographic catalogues record ISPCK as the publisher of numerous theological and religious studies works.

Distribution

In addition to publishing, ISPCK operates distribution activities for literature. The organisation describes a network involving bookshops, retail outlets, book tables, churches and theological institutions.

ISPCK also makes books available through its online book service and supports print-on-demand for some titles.

ISPCK’s present office is located at Kashmere Gate, Delhi. Its official contact information gives the address as Post Box 1585, 1654, Madarsa Road, Kashmere Gate, Delhi.

The organisation’s historical account also identifies Kashmere Gate as the location of its registered office.
